What is Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction happens if men are unable to maintain an erection to perform sexual intercourse. It is a type of impotence caused due to psychological reasons.
Many men have few problems in maintaining an erection but if it becomes a regular phenomenon, this affects their confidence, brings stress and creates problems in their relationship. The risk factor for heart disease is erectile dysfunction.
Ayurveda mentions erectile dysfunction like-
A man with a strong desire for sexual acts performs with his cooperative partner, but couldn’t perform the act due to his phallus (penis) or looseness (absence of erection).
When his desires and determination are unable to get an erection, it results in perspiration, affliction with tiredness and frustration to perform sex.
Physiology of normal erection based on Ayurveda
One among the five types of vayu is ‘Apaanavayu’ located in the urinary bladder, testicles, thighs, phallus, umbilicus, anus, groin and colon. Their functions are voiding of stools and urine and ejaculation of semen.
Ejaculation and erection processes mentioned by Sushruta,“ If a man has desire (iccha) to have sex, the response to touch increases (Vayu located in skin causing flow of signals from skin to brain, leading to a sensation of touch). It causes ‘harsha’ or arousal.
Arousal intensifies the actions of vayu and at the moment when it is highly active, vayu liberates the heat of pitta or ‘Tejas.
Hence Vayu and Tejas could increase the heartbeat, body temperature and blood flow causing erection.
